透過化學鍵連結，由兩種以上的元素依固定比例的原子數量與種類所組成的複合純物質。其性質與構成元素的性質完全不同；構成元素在化合後失去各自的個別特性。若為兩種以上物質未依固定比例、僅是物理混合，且各成分仍保有其個別性質並可由一般物理方法分離者，稱為「混合物」。

英文....	Complex pure substances made up of two or more elements in definite proportions with respect to the number and kind of atoms, held together by chemical bonds. They have entirely different properties from those of the constituent elements, which lose their individual character. For combinations of two or more substances in no definite proportions that are only physically mixed and within which the constituent substances retain their individual properties and are separable by ordinary physical means, use "mixtures."
荷蘭語....	Complexe, zuivere stoffen, opgebouwd uit twee of meer elementen in vaste verhoudingen wat betreft het aantal en de soorten atomen, die bij elkaar worden gehouden door chemische bindingen. Ze hebben totaal andere eigenschappen dan de samenstellende elementen, die hun individuele karakter hebben verloren. Gebruik 'mengsels' voor combinaties van twee of meer stoffen zonder vastgestelde verhoudingen, die alleen fysisch zijn vermengd en waarbij de samenstellende substanties hun individuele eigenschappen behouden en scheidbaar zijn door gewone fysische eigenschappen.
西班牙語....	Sustancias complejas puras formadas por dos o más elementos en proporciones definidas en relación al número y tipo de átomos, que se mantienen unidos por enlaces químicos. Tienen propiedades totalmente diferentes a las de los elementos constituyentes, que pierden su carácter individual. Para combinaciones de dos o más sustancias en proporciones no definidas y dentro de las cuales las sustancias constituyentes mantienen sus propiedades individuales y son separables por medios físicos ordinarios, use "mezcla".
