Mirayon (the “flying fish festival”) of the Tao people begins on the first day of the month of Paneb. It involves nocturnal fishing carried out by large boats manned by six up to ten people. Every male member who can walk independently in the Tao society should come to the beach to attend the fish-summoning ritual. The first flying fish caught in Mirayon should be treated with procedures as follows: in Mirayon, as crews of every boat live together in panlagan, a communal house used during the month of Paneb, the family of one of the crews whose house contains more than three doors is to be chosen to cook the fish in their hearth; and the flesh of the first-caught fish should be shared by all of the fishing crews and members of the family in charge of cooking the fish.
When pikaokaod, the third month in the Tao calendar, sets in, fishing outing is allowed only for single boats, twos and threes using longline in daytime. In pikaokaod the crews no longer need to dwell in panlagan, while the flying fish catch of the day should be cooked there and evenly allotted to every fishing crew and their families. Mirayon not only lies at the center of Tao people’s economic fishing but defines with its rituals the way in which individuals (families inclusive) are related to the entire tribe as a collective whole.
