大型喬木，主要為落葉樹種，原生於東亞、北美洲東部與西印度群島等地。其大型葉片能為許多鳥類及動物提供遮蔽與棲息空間。此屬(Catalpa)的英文命名緣自美洲「卡托巴」族原住民(Catawba, 此屬樹木為其部落圖騰)，因進行科學描述的植物學家拼寫錯誤，英文以Catalpa的稱呼沿用至今。

英文....	Genus of large, mainly deciduous trees native to eastern Asia, eastern North America, and the West Indies, having large leaves that provide shade and habitat for many birds and other animals. The name derives from the Catawba Native American name for these trees (the tribal totem), with the misspelling "Catalpa" being instituted by the describing botanist.
