教育學齡前兒童的機構，一般供五歲兒童於上小學前就讀一年。在許多教育體系中，幼稚園屬於公立學校體制的一環，通常是半天班，為過渡階段，讓兒童適應上小學後整天在學校的作息。兒童在園中透過創意遊戲、與他人相處互動等學習基礎技能，同時接受基本班級教育。以前的幼稚園僅為學前幼兒園或日間托兒機構，很少或完全沒有班級教育，現在某些地區的幼稚園仍屬於此種類型。此詞彙源自德文，字面意義為「孩童的花園」。

Educational institutions serving pupils in the year prior to their entering the first grade, typically at age five. In many educational systems, kindergarten is part of a public school program, typically lasting half-days and serving as a transition from home to full days of formal schooling; children are taught to develop basic skills through creative play, social interaction, and rudimentary classroom education is begun. In the past, and today in some places, kindergarten includes very little or no classroom instruction, serving instead as a preschool or daycare program. The term comes from the German for "garden for children."
