低速行駛的運貨車、有軌電車或其他車輛，用來載運乘客、有時也運載輕型貨物，相對距離較短，使用高架電纜或平行的軌道。其軌道原先為平板的木條，之後則以一段段的石頭或鐵板構築讓車輛的輪軌，軌道有時突出於路面或與道路齊平。路面電車可以手動或自動方式操作，通常由高架電纜或軌道來供電。若特指手動操作、電力驅動的大眾軌道車輛，定時沿街道行駛且具道路先行權者，則見“市內有軌電車”一詞。

Low-speed carts, cars, or other vehicles that are used for the conveyance of passengers, or occasionally of light loads of goods, relatively short distances, and that use overhead cables or tracks of parallel rails. The rails were originally flat planks of wood; later, lengths of stone or plates of iron that form wheel-tracks for vehicles were used. The tracks may be raised above or flush with the road surface. Trams may be manually or automatically operated, and typically use electricity supplied by the overhead cable or the rails. To refer specifically to manually operated, electrically powered, public passenger rail vehicles running regularly on exclusive right of way along streets, use "streetcars."
