三種野生似犬的食肉動物中最為人所知的一個物種，即一般所謂的狼，是犬科成員中最大型的非馴養動物，棲息於北半球廣大的地區。灰狼曾一度遍及整個北美，從阿拉斯加與加拿大北極區一路往南直到墨西哥中部，以及遍佈北緯二十度以上的歐洲與亞洲地區。過去認為家犬是灰狼的後裔，但新的研究指出反而是狼與狗兩者具有共同的祖先。人類的神話、民間傳說、語言中經常會有灰狼的身影，灰狼對於人類在神話、傳奇故事、文學與藝術的想像上有著極大的影響。

The best-known of the three species of wild doglike carnivores known as wolves. It is the largest nondomestic member of the dog family (Canidae) and inhabits vast areas of the Northern Hemisphere. It once ranged over all of North America from Alaska and Arctic Canada southward to central Mexico and throughout Europe and Asia above 20 degrees N latitude. There are at least five subspecies of gray wolf. It was formerly thought that domestic dogs were descended from gray wolves, but new research suggests that instead both the wolf and dogs had a common ancestor. Pervasive in human mythology, folklore, and language, the gray wolf has had an impact on the human imagination in mythology, legends, literature, and art.
