格雷果聖歌 Gregorian chant

指教堂的單聲部歌樂，其節拍自由、音域狹小，因中世紀拉丁文禮拜儀式之需求而發展出此風格。葛利果聖歌為單音音樂，雖可能有器樂伴奏，但非必要。此聖歌之名稱來自教宗聖額我略一世(Saint Gregory the Great) （約生於西元540年，卒於西元604年）之名，據稱葛利果聖歌由他將之標準化，儘管本詞彙之形成是在西元十八世紀中期。本詞彙常與素歌(plain chant)畫上等號，不僅包括中世紀早期的教堂音樂，亦泛指其後風格接近之作。更狹義而言，葛利果聖歌係指羅馬早期的素歌形式，有別於安布羅斯(Ambrosian)聖詠、高盧(Gallican)聖詠，和莫札拉布(Mozarabic)聖詠。此三者類似於葛利果聖歌，但自西元第八世紀起至十一世紀止，逐漸為其取代。

| 英文.... | Refers to church music sung as a single vocal line in free rhythm and a restricted scale, in a style developed for the medieval Latin liturgy. It is monodic and does not need instrumental accompaniment although this may be provided. Gregorian chant is named after Saint Gregory the Great (ca. 540-604) who is said to have standardized it although the term itself dates from the mid-18th century. The term is often used synonymously with plain chant, comprising not only the Church music of the early Middle Ages, but also later compositions written in a similar style. More narrowly, Gregorian chant refers to a Roman form of early plain chant as distinguished from the Ambrosian, Galliean, and Mozarabic chants, which were similar, but were gradually supplanted by it from the eighth to the eleventh century. |

Het gregoriaans is monodisch en instrumentale begeleiding is niet noodzakelijk, maar wel mogelijk. De naam is ontleend aan de heilige Gregorius de Grote (circa 540-604) die deze muzieksoort zou hebben gestandaardiseerd, hoewel de benaming 'gregoriaans' pas sinds het midden van de 17de eeuw gangbaar is. De term wordt vaak gebruikt als synoniem voor 'cantus planus', waaronder niet alleen de kerkmuziek van de vroege middeleeuwen valt, maar ook latere composities die in een soortgelijke stijl zijn geschreven. In beperktere zin verwijst de term naar een Romeinse vorm van vroege cantus planus, ter onderscheiding van Ambrosiaanse, Gallicaanse en Mozarabische gezangen, die op gregoriaans leken maar er geleidelijk door werden verdrongen, in de periode van de 8ste tot de 11de eeuw n.
