Distinct from "magicians (illusionists)", who create illusions and perform sleight-of-hand, conjuring tricks, and other types of stage magic.

Zij die zich bezighouden met het bestuderen en beoefenen van de magie, rituele activiteiten die zijn bedoeld om menselijke of natuurlijke gebeurtenissen te sturen of te beïnvloeden door middel van het oproepen van externe en onpersoonlijke mystieke krachten van buiten het gangbare menselijke domein; kenmerkende rituele activiteiten zijn onder andere het gebruik van speciale voorwerpen en het uitspreken van bezweringsformules.
