通常指基督教、伊斯蘭教或佛教的宗教團體，遵從共同生活準則、從事某一特定工作或遵循某一特定祈禱日程表，並服從上位者指示，但通常不會排外地居住在與世隔絕之地，或如同修道院或僧院一般受限的空間。
