用以作為後續物品生產工作模型的製件。該詞彙最常用來指具機能性的立體物件，如家具、建築、機械等，而較少指繪畫、素描或雕塑等。用於繪畫及素描時的延伸意義，在於描述觀念上的性質，而非個別的物件。雕塑上的「原型」，僅用於指在尺寸、形狀和細節上，與其他完成作品相符者。若指比例縮小的立體雕塑模型，則用「小模型（maquette）」一詞，而更精細的雕塑或繪畫草稿粗樣，則用「雛型（bozzetti）」一詞。

英文....	A manufactured object that serves as the working model for the production of subsequent copies. The term is most often associated with three-dimensional objects that are functional: furniture, buildings, and machines, and less often with painting, drawing, or sculpture. Usage is extended to paintings and drawings to describe conceptual affinities, rather than discrete objects. Use "prototypes" to describe sculpture only if the works conform to other completed works in size, shape, and detail. For small-scale three dimensional renderings for sculpture, use "maquettes," and for more finely detailed sketches for sculpture or painting, use "bozzetti."
荷蘭語....	Een vervaardigd object dat is bedoeld als functioneel model voor de productie van volgende exemplaren. De term wordt meestal geassocieerd met driedimensionale functionele objecten (meubels, gebouwen en machines) en in mindere mate met de schilder-, teken- of beeldhouwkunst. Soms is de term ook van toepassing op schilderijen en tekeningen bij het beschrijven van conceptuele gelijkenissen, en dus niet van feitelijke objecten. Gebruik 'prototypes' uitsluitend voor het beschrijven van beeldhouwkunst indien het formaat, de vorm en de details van de werken overeenkomen met andere voltooide werken. Gebruik 'maquettes' voor kleine driedimensionale versies van beeldhouwwerken, en 'bozzetti' voor meer in detail uitgewerkte versies van een beeldhouwwerk of schilderij.
