Se refiere al estilo de la arquitectura desarrollado durante la dinastía Sung (970-1279 BCE) en China e introducido en Japón junto con el budismo Zen durante el período de Kamakura (1185-1333). El estilo es caracterizado por se más pequeño, edificios estructuralmente mas complejos que antes, fuertemente articulado.
