猶太宗教節期，用以紀念耶路撒冷第二聖殿再度貢獻給上帝（西元前164年）；這座聖殿在三年前被安條克四世（Antiochus IV Epiphanes）所褻瀆；這位敘利亞國王對此相當氣餒，因此放棄滅絕猶太信仰的意圖。雖然現代以色列傾向強調馬加比猶大（Judas Maccabeus）在軍事上的勝利，但是點亮九燈燭臺的特殊儀式還是讓人聯想起猶太法典中的故事：小量的非供俗用油，只夠燃燒一天，但是卻奇蹟似地在神廟中燃燒整整八天，直到新的油料得以加入。每年的光明節是從基斯流月（Kislev）的第 25 日（在 12 月）開始延續 8 天；在這段時間內，除了點亮典禮用蠟燭，猶太人還會相互交換禮物，而孩童會玩節日遊戲。

光明節燈

英文....	Jewish religious season commemorating the rededication (164 BCE) of the Second Temple of Jerusalem after its desecration three years earlier by order of Antiochus IV Epiphanes; the Syrian king was thus frustrated in his attempt to extirpate the Jewish faith. Though modern Israel tends to emphasize the military victory of Judas Maccabeus, the distinctive rite of lighting the menorah also recalls the Talmud story of how the small supply of nondesecrated oil--enough for one day--miraculously burned in the Temple for eight full days until new oil could be obtained. Beginning on Kislev 25 (in December), Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days; during this time, in addition to the lighting of the ceremonial candles, gifts are exchanged and children play holiday games.

Chr. van de tweede tempel in Jeruzalem nadat deze drie jaar eerder was ontheiligd op bevel van Antiochus IV Epiphanes; zo werd de Syrische koning gefrustreerd in zijn poging om het joodse geloof uit te roeien. Hoewel in het hedendaagse Israël meer de nadruk wordt gelegd op de militaire overwinning van Judas Maccabeus, roept de kenmerkende rite met het ontsteken van de menora ook het verhaal uit de Talmoed in herinnering over de kleine hoeveelheid niet-ontheiligde olie – genoeg voor één dag – die op wonderbaarlijke wijze acht hele dagen in de tempel brandde totdat nieuwe olie beschikbaar was. Chanoeka begint op 25 kislev (in december) en duurt acht dagen. In die periode worden, naast het ontsteken van de ceremoniële kaarsen, geschenken uitgewisseld en spelen kinderen vakantiespelletjes.
