在文學或視覺藝術作品的題材中，假借另一種可巧妙暗示的類似題材來表達抽象概念的手法。寓言主要是由擬人化與象徵符號所構成。寓言主要出現在西方藝術中，結合了擬人化及/或象徵符號，而這些元素則是基於概念與表達之間約定成俗的默契，用以指稱藝術作品之外的概念。寓言表面上呈現之題材所採用的事物與情境，實際上是以引申或延伸的隱喻來指涉另一個主題。寓言有可能具有兩層以上的意義，觀賞者或讀者需透過解說闡釋的過程方能明瞭。

Method of expressing abstract ideas in the subject of a literary or visual arts work under the guise of another subject of aptly suggestive resemblance. An allegory is principally constructed from personifications and symbols. Found primarily in Western art, allegories include combinations of personifications and/or symbols, which, on the basis of a conventionally agreed relation between concept and representation, refer to an idea outside the work of art. The properties and circumstances attributed to the apparent subject of the allegory really refer to another subject in an extended or continued metaphor. Allegories may have meaning on two or more levels that the viewer or reader can understand only through an interpretive process.
