一般是指描繪一個神聖實體，且本身即被視為神聖的各式圖像。在特定的用法中，可用來指稱東儀教會（Eastern Rite churches）從西元第六世紀開始，根據既定作畫規則（即以基督、聖母、聖者及盛宴為主題)製作的各式基督教圖像，可供在教會或家中祈禱之用。最為普遍的聖像形式為繪於嵌板上的蛋彩畫，但是也可能繪製成濕壁畫、浮雕或其他平面形式。尊崇聖像的基督徒們會將尊敬與膜拜加以區分，雖然在實際施行上這樣的區分是模糊不清的。若是指稱神聖的或是被奉為神祇化身的非基督教圖像，使用「偶像」或者是「宗教膜拜圖像」等詞彙。

英文....	In general meaning, images that portray a sacred entity and that are themselves regarded as sacred. In specific meaning, the term is typically used particularly for Christian images produced in the Eastern Rite churches, since the 6th century, according to prescribed formulas of subject (Christ, the Virgin, saints, and the great feasts) and composition, for devotional use in the church or home. Most commonly comprising tempera on panel, but they may be in any two-dimensional or relief medium, including fresco. Christians who venerate icons make the distinction between veneration and worship, although in actual practice the distinction is blurred. For a non-Christian image that is sacred or embodies a deity, use "idol" or "cult image."
荷蘭語....	In het algemeen afbeeldingen waarop een heilige entiteit is geportretteerd; de afbeelding zelf wordt als heilig beschouwd. In een meer specifieke betekenis heeft de term doorgaans vooral betrekking op christelijke afbeeldingen, gemaakt vanaf de 6de eeuw binnen de context van de oosters-orthodoxe kerken, aan de hand van voorgeschreven regels voor onderwerp (Christus, Maria, heiligen en hoogfeesten) en compositie, die dienden voor godsdienstige handelingen thuis of in de kerk. Meestal zijn iconen in tempera op paneel geschilderd, maar ook andere tweedimensionale media, waaronder fresco's of reliëfs, zijn mogelijk. Christenen die iconen vereren, maken onderscheid tussen aanbidding en verering, hoewel er in de praktijk geen duidelijk onderscheid is. Gebruik 'afgodsbeeld' of 'cultusbeeld' voor een niet-christelijk beeld dat heilig is of een godheid belichaamt.
西班牙語....	Imágenes producidas en las iglesias de rito oriental desde el siglo VI, de acuerdo a fórmulas preescritas de temas (Cristo, la Virgen, los santos y las grandes fiestas) y composición, para uso devocional en la iglesia o en el hogar. Comúnmente en temple sobre madera, pero puede estar realizadas en cualquier medio bidimensional o en relieve, incluyendo fresco.
