包含約45個屬，包含草本、灌木、小型喬木與藤本植物，主要分布於熱帶地區。為蕁麻目（學名Urticales）中具代表性的科。許多種類，特別是蕁麻屬（Urtica）與艾麻草屬（Laportea）者，莖葉上有螫毛。葉形多樣，樹液通常為水狀。綠色小花，通常簇生於葉腋。可能雌雄同株。

Family containing around 45 genera of herbs, shrubs, small trees, and vines, distributed primarily in tropical regions. The family is typical of the nettle order (Urticales). Many species, especially the nettles (Urtica) and Australian nettle trees (Laportea), have stinging hairs on the stems and leaves. The leaves are varied and the sap is usually watery. The small, greenish flowers often form clusters in the leaf axils. Both male and female flowers may be borne on the same plant.
