巨大的樹種，生長期間可達數百年或數千年，可見於美國加州和奧瑞岡州，散佈在內華達山脈的西坡上海拔 900 至 2,600 公尺（3,000 至 8,500 英呎）處。巨杉是該屬中唯一現存的樹種。
