原生於北半球溫帶地區、涵蓋大約100個灌木與喬木物種的屬，樹皮色暗，通常帶有刺，樹葉為深綠色橢圓形。其中許多物種的樹皮可生產黃色染料，小而黑的果實可作為瀉劑。
