末法 mappō
範圍註 ：
為日本佛教中對末日思想最清楚的闡述，一般認為此佛教法運第三期，也是最末期，乃從西元1052年開始。在此佛法發展末期，佛教在世人眼裡已敗壞至僅存教義而無實際實踐之地步。此種宗教悲觀主義及對末世來臨預作準備之思想在平安時代晚期促成了藝術委託製作的風行；達官顯貴們委託雕塑、書法、繪畫與寺廟建造等藝術之製作，希望藉由對阿彌陀佛之崇敬而獲得救贖。

| 英文.... | The clearest expression of apocalyptic thought in Japanese Buddhism, this third and final age of Buddhism was believed to have begun in 1052. During this end of the Buddhist Law, Buddhism is thought to degenerate to the point where the teaching still exists, but there is no true practice of it. This religious pessimism and preparation for the end times caused a flurry of art commissions during the late Heian period in areas such as sculpture, calligraphy, painting and temple building by wealthy aristocrats who hoped to gain salvation by honoring Amida Buddha. |
