一般而言，指隸屬一個軍隊的人，不管是否為主權或非主權國家、或是主權國家內的軍事陣營或師、或個別領袖之軍隊。尤其是指屬於士兵階級的軍事人員，不同於委任軍官。若指不論是否為軍隊實際成員而受其社會或團體所認可，參與戰爭中的戰鬥或為此接受訓練的人，請參閱「戰士」一詞。

英文....Generally refers to those belonging to an army, whether that of a sovereign state, a faction or division within a sovereign state, or of an individual leader. Specifically refers to military personnel of enlisted rank, as distinguished from commissioned officers. For those trained for or engaged in the physical combat of warfare and sanctioned in that function by the society or group for which they fight, irrespective of actual membership in an army, see "warriors."
荷蘭語....In het algemeen te gebruiken voor diegenen in het leger van een soevereine staat, een factie of divisie in een soevereine staat of van een leider. Wordt ook met name gebruikt voor militair personeel met de rang van gewoon soldaat, dit ter onderscheid van officieren.
西班牙語....Úsese generalmente para aquellos pertenecientes a un ejército, tanto de un estado soberano, un bando o división de un estado soberano o de un líder individual. Usar también específicamente para personal militar de rango alistado, como diferencia de oficiales comisionados. Para aquellos entrenados u ocupados en el combate físico de armamento y ratificados en esa función por la sociedad o grupo para el cual pelean, sin consideración actual de membresía en un ejercito, use "guerrero"
