根據釋迦牟尼佛之開悟與教誨的哲學和宗教，在西元前六世紀初起源於現今印度東北部。佛教於東南亞及東亞的藝術與文化層面扮演主要角色，相信透過接受自身的局限，以及放棄會引起失望與悲傷的世俗欲求及渴望，能夠使人類的苦痛得以昇華，而在開悟（涅盤）過程中得以從短暫的生命以及建築在財富、社會地位與家庭上的個人自尊中獲得解脫。此宗教的中心思想為「無我」，認為自我是處於活動狀態或是一連串的形式改變，而非固定的形上實體狀態。佛教的架構奠基於「三寶」，即生命三元素：佛(老師)、法(規範)、僧(眾)。

The religion also centers around 'anatman', or no-self, the idea that the self is in a state of action or a series of changing manifestations rather than in a state of fixed, metaphysical substance. The structure of the religion is based on the Triratna ("Three Jewels" of Buddha), a tripartite schematic for living based on three elements: Buddha (the teacher), dharma (the teaching), and sangha (community).
