上弦的拋射式武器，用於發射箭，一般具一根長棍棒，以木製、金屬、玻璃纖維，或其他材料所製成，一條牢固的長弦則繫在棍棒的兩端，彎曲成一個弧形，可能是永久固定的，也可能因弦的張力而造成彎曲。往後拉弦，箭放置於其後端的槽口，然後放手，以推進發射箭。

英文....	Stringed projectile weapons designed to propel arrows, generally consisting of a long stave of wood, metal, fiberglass, or other flexible material, with a length of strong string fastened to the tips of the stave which is bent in a curve, either permanently or from the tension of the string. The string is drawn back, holding the arrow by means of a notch in its rear tip, and propels the arrow upon release.

Er is een stuk sterk touw gespannen tussen de uiteinden van de stok die is gekromd, als normale vorm of door de spanning van de pees. De pees wordt naar achteren getrokken, waarbij de pijl op zijn plaats wordt gehouden door een inkeping in de achterkant; de pijl schiet weg wanneer de pees wordt losgelaten.
